Naturally Heal Digestive Problems, Brain Gut Axis
Stress, Digestive Problems And Your Immune System
We live in a stressful world. But are you aware of how profoundly stress affects your overall health and wellbeing?
Stress affects you on a physical, mental, emotional and soul level and can lead to digestive issues, leaky gut syndrome, autoimmune syndromes and body-wide pain and inflammation.
Stress And Your Body
So, how can stress affect you so dramatically? And why does emotional stress have such an impact on your physical health?
On a scientific level, the answer lies in your brain gut axis and your vagus nerve. On a spiritual, or soul, level, the answer lies in in your energy field body and your chakras.
When helping clients to heal, I utilise both scientific and spiritual approaches, I find this approach has the best results. My background in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) allows me great insights on the impact of diet, life events and emotions affect energy flow (chi / qi) through the meridians, on digestive health. I also look at bio fiend energetics and chakra energy flow.
I am finding, more and more, that most clients suffer from some level of Leaky Gut Syndrome. Scientific studies have shown that digestive health has a direct causal link to the development of auto immune syndromes. inflammatory conditions and chronic fatigue issues.
What Is The Brain Gut Axis?
The gut brain connection (axis) is a highly evolved bio directional communication system between your gut (small and large intestine) and your brain, via the Vagus nerve.
The vagus nerve transmits information from your brain to your gut and from your gut to your brain in the fraction of a second. This communication plays a vital role in your overall health, regulating your digestive system, mood, stress levels, sleep cycles, mental function and many other necessary body functions.
This close connection makes your digestive tract highly sensitive to your emotions e.g. when under stress, your brain secretes stress hormones (cortisol, CRF, ACTH, catecholamines) which directly affect your gut microbiome in a negative way. Your gut microbiome is your balance of bad versus good gut bacteria and the correct balance is essential for homeostasis and health.
Your emotions and mindset have a direct effect on your gut microbiome and a balanced gut microbiome is essential for your overall health. Also, don’t forget that 70% of your immune function comes from your gut microbiome!
Inversely, an unhealthy gut microbiome can directly affect your emotional and mental health. Your gut bacteria produce hundreds of different neurological chemicals that are necessary for your brain to correctly regulate hundreds of mental processes, such as mood regulation, cognitive function, memory, focus, concentration, learning ability etc.
Your good and bad gut bacteria balance (gut flora balance) is one of the fundamental requirements for your health. It is impossible to have a healthy body and mind if your gut microbiome is out of balance.
Your gut microbiome is often referred to as your ‘second brain’. It houses a complex ecosystem of micro-organisms which have a direct impact on immune function, emotions, general mood and overall health and wellbeing.
What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Leaky gut (also called gut permeability) usually refers to increased or abnormal intestinal permeability i.e. the walls of your intestines are more porous that they should be.
Your intestinal lining acts as a barrier, ensuring that food nutrients are properly absorbed and toxins are prevented from entering your bloodstream. When this barrier is compromised, it allows particles of toxins, undigested food, and bacteria to “leak” into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and immune responses.
Over the longer term, leaky gut keeps your immune system on high alert, constantly dealing with ‘invading’ particles and can lead to autoimmune conditions and inflammatory disease.
Causes Of Leaky Gut Syndrome
The most common causes of leaky gut are;
- Poor diet: A diet high in processed foods, chemicals, GMOs, carbohydrates and sugar,
- Lack of Fibre: A diet low in fibre (fruit, vegetables, brans),
- Nutritional deficiencies: Long term nutritional deficiencies especially zinc and vitamins A and D,
- Emotional trauma: Single major life events such as relationship breakup, job loss, death of a loved one etc.,
- Emotional stress: continued life stress such as living conditions, toxic relationships, illness, excessive negative thinking, depression, continual anxiety and fear,
- Overuse of antibiotics.
All of the above affect the delicate balance of your gut microbiome, inhibiting the growth of good bacteria and allowing the overgrowth of bad bacteria (as in the case of Candida Albicans / Candidasis).
This imbalance in your gut flora (dysbiosis) often leads to further damage to your gut lining and local intestinal or stomach inflammation, but can also lead to inflammation in other parts of your body.
An inflamed gut lining can cause health conditions such as IBS, stomach or intestinal pain and/or discomfort, food intolerances, nausea, excessive wind or painful wind, bloating, constipation / diarrhoea, leaky gut syndrome, etc.
Symptoms Of Leaky Gut
The symptoms of leaky gut syndrome can include one or more of the following;
- Stomach or intestine pain / discomfort,
- Abdominal bloating
- Inflammation (local or all over body)
- Inflammatory health conditions
- Chronic fatigue
- Everyday feeling of general unwellness
- Autoimmune conditions
- Chronic diarrhoea or constipation
- Food sensitivities or intolerances
- Constant brain food / difficulty in thinking
- Joint and/or muscle pain/weakness
- Inflammatory skin issues such as eczema or psoriasis.
Emotional And Spiritual Causes Of Digestive Problems
Your emotional / spiritual health plays a huge part in maintaining your good digestive health. We often think that the word ‘spiritual’ only refers to your soul. To me, ‘spiritual’ refers to your spirit, your senses, your thoughts, your beliefs. And the health of your spirit is vital to the health of your physical body, your mind and your emotions.
Our bodies are the physical home of our spirit. The spirit is our true ‘us’, the fundamental essence of who we are. If we look to the health of our spirit, our physical body will follow. If we neglect the health of our spirit, the physical body will be unable to stay in health.
Poor physical health decisions can also affect the health of the spirit. When you put unhealthy foods into your body, neglect your physical fitness, deny or suppress your emotions, allow yourself to taken advantage of, all this tells you that you lack in self love and this lack damages the health of your spirit.
Poor Boundaries And Leaky Gut
In the spiritual sense, leaky gut is linked to having poor boundaries in life. Just as the boundary (lining) of your large intestine becomes permeable, your personal energetic boundary is also permeable.
Signs Of Poor Personal Boundaries
- Relationships tend to be difficult or chaotic (parental/siblings/friends/partners)
- You find making decisions a challenge
- You fee discomfort/guilt when you feel that you have let people down
- You experience guilt and/or anxiety over the smallest things
- You are often tired for no reason
- You feel exhausted/drained in the company of some people
- You tend to over-share and/or over-give
- You are frequently the victim of situations
- You feel annoyance/stress/irritation most of the time
- You silently/secretly feel that you are being treated unfairly
- You feel that people take advantage of you
- You often say ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no’
- You usually think of others needs before your own
- You feel that no one listens to you or considers your needs
- You often feel used by other people.
Healing Your Digestive Issues Naturally
Practices such as meditation, addressing emotional issues or childhood traumas, practicing self love, practicing gratitude can help you start to address the spiritual and emotional causes of digestive issues, including leaky gut.
Energy healing, bio field healing and chakra balancing can also help you to in your journey towards health and overall well being. All these therapies focus on reducing stress and healing emotional and spiritual issues.
How I Approach Digestive Healing
When a client comes to me with digestive issues, I usually start by completing a full health diagnosis from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective. I find that traditional Chinese medicine is very in depth and precise when seeking the root cause of this issue, whether the cause is spiritual, emotional or physical.
Once the health consultation is completed, we can focus on the areas in your life that need healing. We will also discuss your diet, seeking where to add beneficial foods and reduce harmful foods for maximum benefit. You may also find certain food supplements beneficial, such as probiotics, digestive enzymes, intestinal fibre and colon cleanses and these will also be discussed.
